You must be opioid-free before receiving Vivitrol unless your healthcare provider decides that you don't need to go through detox first.
Vivitrol, administered once a month, can cost about $1500 a shot. But the company that produces the product told PIX11 it offers a Vivitrol Value Program that will cover up to $500 of the cost, with the hope that insurance and other government programs will cover the rest.Jan 30, 2015
Anyone who receives a Vivitrol injection must not use any type of opioid (must be opioid-free) including street drugs, prescription pain medicines, cough, cold, or diarrhea medicines that contain opioids, or opioid dependence treatments, buprenorphine or methadone, for at least 7 to 14 days before starting Vivitrol. Using opioids in the 7 to 14 days before you start receiving Vivitrol may cause you to suddenly have symptoms of opioid withdrawal when you get the Vivitrol injection. Sudden opioid withdrawal can be severe and you may need to go to the hospital.
My true concern is for those being court ordered there who do not have a choice. Many were begging to leave because of the less than mediocre care as well. Stay tuned... they considered the wrong addict as a nobody in this case... you'll be hearing more pertaining this incident from attorneys, medical professionals, and news broadcasters... my oath is to stand up for addicts... ALL addicts not just those whom I know.... a note to those there... help is on its way
I must say this place may have been good at one time but as an addiction and recovery counselor (in training) I was very disappointed in this place. My ex-husband who is also the father of my children finally broke down to go get help which he needed. I feel awful that I even encouraged him to go because he had my son and a friend take him it was 4 hours away. He arrived at 1 am. He was not served breakfast because he wasn't up by 630 so his tray was given to someone else. He also refused the vivitrol injection because he had taken street drugs the night before.... however he was considered "not complying with treatment" was allowed one phone call and then was asked to leave the property. After securing a ride for him and praying because he has high blood pressure, was not in his right mind, was somewhere he was not familiar with, had no phone, and had to wait 4 hours for someone to arrive. I called the nurse and asked if someone could do a safety check and that someone was on the way. I was not met with any compassion nor understanding 2 qualities I would expect one to possess if working with those who have addictions. This is a couple excerpts from the vivitrol drug site....
Sudden opioid withdrawal.
As stated previously, my childrens' father had taken street drugs as well as bupernorphine the facility was aware of this because he had blood work done at a hospital prior....
Seneca Health Services is the WORST mental healthcare provider I have ever been associated with! They do not care about a patient's well being, they absolutely couldn't create less about one's mental stability! All this place is, is another government funded money trap designed around the principal that once someone is desperate enough they will pay any amount for some "professional" "help"!
Vivitrol is not safe for pregnant women and is not approved for individuals who have taken any form of opioid within the past seven days.
And this is why they push the injection....
